Q&A with Ley
Thursday November 4th, 12-1pm
This week's Guest: Dan Hebert
AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION/ CURRENT RESEARCH
"I conduct research on migration as a form of contemporary globalization. At the broadest scale, this includes an interest on how migration is controlled by nation states through policy and regulatory systems, and also how people become mobile, with or without the consent of states. I try to understand Canadian immigration policy within this wider context, and consider it in relation to the policies of other countries, especially in Europe and Australasia. At the local scale I study the consequences of immigration in Canadian cities, highlighting Vancouver’s situation (over 830,000 foreign-born in a population of 2.1 million people). More specifically, I look at the integration of newcomers in the labour and housing markets of cities, and how this changes their residential structure and social relations." ~ D. Hiebert

Geography Craft Fair
The holidays are approaching quickly--are you in need of gifts? Or do you create them yourselves and need an outlet to share them with the world? Do you have an outside crafting/art hobby or business? The Geography Craft Fair is taking place NOVEMBER 25, 2010 in Geography Room 101 from 6-9 pm and is a fantastic opportunity to sell, browse and/or purchase gifts while meeting others in the Geography department. Food and beverages will be provided at a cost.
If you are interested in participating as a vendor, we are currently looking for an assortment of goods--some suggestions are as follows (however we are open to almost anything):
- Visual art/paintings
- Postcards
- Photography
- Jewelry
- Desserts or preservatives
- Pottery
- Wood carvings
- Clothing/textiles
To rent a booth to display your wares, cash or a cheque of $20/table (made out to the Geography Students' Association) can be dropped off at the Geography office between Nov. 1-19 with a registration form (also available in the office). All proceeds from table rentals will go towards GeoGala, the end of the year Geography formal dinner/social. Profits made at each booth will go to the respective vendor.
